Paradise Lost

On an island far, far away lives a peaceful and gentle culture steeped in dazzling traditions and fabulous legends.

Bali is a land of hidden paths, bold wildflowers, and lush, emerald leaves; every bend enticing the weary traveler to marvel at the wonders of nature.

A place so alive that even a statue unguarded soon finds itself luxuriating in a runaway carpet of green velvet botanicals...

Wood mask, 'Garuda'

Garuda is the eagle god who travels between heaven and earth. His image is very common in Balinese cremation ceremonies. Legend says that two gargantuan underworld serpents enslaved the Garuda. When he broke free, he flew directly to the heavens and became immortal.

This mask is made of regional suar wood.

Wood sculpture, 'Dragon and Garuda'

This dramatic suar woodcarving is based on an ancient Balinese folktale, depicting the famous eagle, Garuda, riding atop a winged dragon. The folktale states that the Garuda had to find the tirtha amertha ("magical elixir of life") in a secret place guarded by seven dragons. Meticulously carved in celebration of this well-known and loved legend, while paying homage to Garuda, the national symbol of Indonesia, Subrata offers us his stunning gift as a storyteller and his magnificent mastery of wood art.
