Wood sculpture, 'Dragon and Garuda'

This dramatic suar woodcarving is based on an ancient Balinese folktale, depicting the famous eagle, Garuda, riding atop a winged dragon. The folktale states that the Garuda had to find the tirtha amertha ("magical elixir of life") in a secret place guarded by seven dragons. Meticulously carved in celebration of this well-known and loved legend, while paying homage to Garuda, the national symbol of Indonesia, Subrata offers us his stunning gift as a storyteller and his magnificent mastery of wood art.
